Below is a practical breakdown for each group, how to tell the series apart visually and how to prepare a stack of dollars for exchange.
From 1928 to 1996 the U.S. Federal Reserve issued dollar notes with a small portrait in the centre. They had basic security: a black-and-green palette, no watermark (or a minimal one) and a few simple authenticity features.
In 1996 the upgrade began: 50 and 100 dollar notes got a large portrait, a watermark, a security thread and microprinting. By 1998 the update reached the 5, 10 and 20.
In 2003, colour accents and more complex security were added (especially on the 20 dollar note).
In 2006, a new design of the 100 dollar note appeared, with a shifting blue rectangle and many more security features. This series is the most modern and has been in mass circulation since 2013.

This table is the typical practice at most banks in Minsk. The specific rate and scenario for each series is up to the individual bank.

The most reliable way is to look at the series year under the portrait on the front. It says "Series 2006", "Series 2013", and so on.
Other cues:
The rate in the widget is for modern notes. For pre-1996 series, the bank will quote a specific rate at the counter. Details — in the guide to old dollars in Belarus.
At Belarusian bank counters, different denominations are processed at different speeds:
Tip: if you have 500 USD to exchange, it's more convenient to bring five 100s than twenty-five 20s. Exchange time — 3 minutes vs 10–15.

Yes, at the posted rate. The teller may run an extra check.
These are small-portrait series with minimal security. They are accepted in Belarus, but usually via collection processing or at a reduced rate. Better at a major bank.
Not every bank takes it. The 2 dollar note is a rare denomination, and counters are less familiar with it. Better at a major bank after a phone call.
Yes, without caveats. But banks usually don't sell 1 USD notes for BYN — they only accept them.
Most often 50 and 100 USD. Other denominations come up less often and usually require a phone call in advance.
The widget at the top of this article shows the "standard" rate — for modern notes of any denomination. For small denominations (1, 5) there's sometimes a minor difference — check at the counter.
